VISA 1500

Assignment 1, Part A

The advertisement above belongs to the Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) which I came across inside Old Main on TRU campus. It features a call to action, graphics, a phone number and links to their website. In addition, the advertisement is placed onto a bin, doubling as a deposit for those who may want to recycle electronics. The advertisement was made to both serve the association’s purpose of intaking recyclable electronics whilst bringing attention to resources for those who may want to know more about the association and its goals. (Note: I will not be covering the TRU banner applied on top of the advertisement, as it was not part of the original design.)

The design at the top of the advertisement is that of a green geometric pattern in the foreground, whilst the background is that of a clear blue sky. As you progress downwards, the shapes that make up the pattern begin to break away. The advertisement then highlights its call to action in bold, white letters that contrast with the blue background. Beneath is an assortment of electronic devices, followed by the ERA phone number, website, and a man enjoying his time using a laptop.

It is clear to me that this advertisement is embracing imagery surrounding environmentalism, due to its affiliation with recycling. The green, geometric patterns are clearly meant to represent leaves, a sign of healthy vegetation. Paired with the clear blue sky that represents a pollution free atmosphere, one can immediately assume that this association exemplifies environmentalism. In addition, the wide selection of devices displayed, both old and new, gives the viewer a sense that virtually any device will be accepted, whilst serving as a visual link to further explain the purpose of the bin. All text is printed in large letters that contrast with the background, resulting in an easily legible advertisement. Finally, the addition of a man smiling whilst using an electronic device, conveying an expression of happiness in order to invoke a more positive reception for the association.

I believe the goals of the advertisement were achieved when conveying the qualities of the association. Its use of visual metaphors related to environmentalism instantly provides information to the viewer, whilst still providing a call to action and resources to learn more in a coherent manner. The advertisement also leaves me feeling positive and appreciative of such a service, and the implementation of the advertisement on the bin gives me the sense that this association is dedicated to accomplishing its goals.

I found this advertisement inside Old Main right next to the student services booth. Whilst not particularly noticeable, it is easily accessible. In addition, the advertisement does not use attention grabbing colours. However, the placement of the bin in Old Main means many students will walk past it.

Conducting research into the associations’ practices, the ERA has provided charitable services throughout its years of operation. Just recently, the ERA donated 140 devices to impoverished youth and families in Toronto. However, reviews conducted by employees seem to indicate that the company does not treat employees well, with numerous reports of inconsistent pay and poor working conditions. On the other hand, customer reviews via Google indicate premium service, with consistent 5 star reviews. No evidence was found indicating an improvement in working conditions.
