Assignment 1: Part A

I came upon this advertisement from TRU Omega, an independent newspaper and news website, while wandering the university campus one day. This is a free publication published by TRU students for the TRU student, faculty, and staff community.

This was pinned on one of the bulletin boards in the old main building with all other advertisements, and notices but its color scheme caught my eye at first. The juxtaposition of dark and light tones, with blue dominating, was pretty intriguing. This has a female figure with mike in her hands in an urge to share information and speak for change. This is designed around geometric patterns, with all the text in single lines, which is making it a bit formal and straightforward. The background’s geometric pattern went well with all of the muted hues. And the female doodle in the middle is the real eye-catcher of the advertisement poster.

Without even reading the text this advertisement was making it obvious, it is related to news and journalism. The way breaking news is mentioned in the poster piques one’s interest in learning more and conducting research on the subject.

According to me, the graphic clearly conveys the message of newspaper hiring. The usage of graphic components such as a lady holding a microphone, the phrase “breaking news,” and the use of strong lettering performed best in establishing the effect in seconds.

I found this advertisement opposite the information center where every student would notice it passing by. Even without the use of bright colors, this advertisement stood out among the others on the board.

With the image used, this commercial clearly communicates the message to the target audience. With all the long hairs and little body structure, the image chosen could be considered gender bias, but the blank face balances everything out. On the other hand, we can argue that most girls require push to speak up, therefore this will also serve as a motivator.

I didn’t know much about the newspaper, perhaps since I’m new here, but a quick glimpse at the photo prompted me to look it up and apply. The Cariboo Student Newspaper Organisation, a recognized non-profit society, publishes The Omega, a student newspaper. All active members of the society are Thompson Rivers University students in good standing. The society’s Board of Governors meets once a month to oversee the publication. It can be of great assistance to students who wish to work in the publishing and journalism industry since it gives them a place to practice their talents and gain confidence. They work their best to keep the community informed and educated. This brand is unaffected by customer criticism, boycotts, or other reasons.
