Assignment 1, Part A

I took the picture around my high school last year. The advertisement was located in an educational and residential area at 990 Cross Creek Road, West Vancouver. The ad is from West Van Squadron, at St Anthony’s School 595 Keith Road. It is a youth training organization to train both females and males from ages 12-18 to experience and learn about Royal Canadian Air Cadets and become air cadets. It’s an outdoor advertisement targeted at young audiences and is looking to recruit new people looking for high school credits, training to help join the army, and people just looking to be a part of something. It features big, bold capitals in text with a medal/logo on one corner that often symbolizes accomplishment, participation, and honour in the general public eyes. It also has a sponsorship on the other corner, opposite the side of the medal. The logo/medal part has an adequate amount of detail to represent the organization’s intent of quality to the program.

Their style had “JOIN AIR CADETS” in the largest font size, then following under is the organization name and website to access both in the same font size then following after was the age group which was a slightly smaller font compared to the organization name. The evidence shows their intent; from their font size, most would be interested in seeing the largest font size announcing, which is to join their program. Though they also place it in a youth learning environment to attract the maximum possible amount of attendees. Strange enough, they still made the age group fact the smallest font, which doesn’t mean it’s the least important thing. It shows a point that this isn’t an adult program because many assume that army programs are for only adults, and by providing that info that some may not know, teenagers know then that they are welcomed to join. They add a simple, instant message with simple contrast between blue and white with the text, and more colour is added to the images on the corners. The logo also has a circle surrounding it to attract even more attention since the human eye is easier to look at circular shapes. Hence, the brain naturally first looks to the center of an image and any circular shapes and then processes the rest of the picture.

The program doesn’t expect you to join the army but to gain and develop life and work skills and introduce you to possible jobs when you become an adult (What is Air Cadets?). Another attribute that goes well with it is its fitness and living healthy lives(General Information on the Royal Canadian Air Cadets). I have seen this to be quite effective s i know many who have joined the program while I was in high school, but it was not might type of program, so I did not see an interest in it.
